How to Recognize a Good Weld?
While the appearance of a weld alone doesn’t reveal the quality of the fusion between metal pieces, certain visual indicators can suggest a
well-formed and reliable weld.

· Straightness: The weld should follow the edges being joined without deviation.
· Uniformity: A consistent width along the weld, with no gaps, indicates a well-formed weld.
· Minimal Spatter: A clean area around the weld, free from droplets of weld material.
· No Defects: Visible cracks or pinholes on the weld surface often indicate deeper issues within the weld, compromising its strength.
· Proper Penetration: In butt welds, the weld should penetrate completely through the material without excess beyond the surface.
· Smooth Contour: A slight convex profile with minimal variation along the weld length is ideal.
· No Undercutting: The absence of undercutting along the bead edges, where the weld fails to fill the groove, ensures structural integrity.
· Even Ripple Pattern: An aesthetically pleasing, even ripple pattern suggests skilled torch control and a consistent welding process.
A high-quality weld is characterized by clean, smooth surfaces that are well-aligned, with a consistent bead size and appearance across the joint. It should be free from spatter, defects, and any other issues that could compromise the strength or aesthetics of the weld.
